Falls Prevention Awareness
Sept 22, 2017 is not only the first day of Fall, it is also Falls Prevention Awareness Day.
As an independently owned homecare company, Hub’s Home Oxygen & Medical Supplies takes a lot of pride in supporting our local community members, family, and friends. We strive to make lives better, at home.
One important way we can help to protect and care for our friends and family as they age is by preventing falls.By educating them on possible hazards around their homes, we can aim to keep them out of the hospital and at home where they are comfortable and want to be. On average, one out of every four Americans ages 65+ falls each year, and more than 75% of the falls take place either inside the home or very close to the home according to the National Council on Aging (NCOA).
If those statistics don’t drive home just how important fall prevention is- consider the fact that falls are the leading cause of fatal injury among older adults says the NCOA.
So, what is Hub’s doing to protect our community from falls?
At Hubs, we provide affordable, quality products that will provide you and your loved ones with peace of mind as we help to minimize the risks of falls within the home.Items such as bathroom grab bars to prevent falls in and around the shower and bath safety rails for assistance getting up and down off your toilet are always available for walk-in customers in any of our retail stores. Our stores also offer a variety of walkers and rollators to provide stability for unsteady ambulation as well as affordable, high quality stair glides to safely transport family members between floors in the home.
If you or a loved one are worried about the possibility of falls- be proactive.Visit any of our local retail stores and speak with our customer service reps regarding home safety items.
What else can you do?Be aware of any uneven floors, loose cords, and throw rugs.Minimize any of these things in the home where possible.Remove clutter and tripping hazards leaving clear pathways around your home.If you have fallen recently, speak to your doctor about it as soon as possible.

Feel Your Best with an Afflovest
Portable Vest Therapy
High Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation (HFCWO) Therapy, also known as vest therapy is a common treatment used by patients with illnesses such as Cystic Fibrosis, Bronchiectasis, and a variety of neuromuscular diseases. These conditions can cause excessive amounts of secretions and/or can make it very difficult for patients to manage and clear these secretions.
There are several different brands or styles of vest therapy. Some of the most common HFCWO devices used by patients in the home and in healthcare organizations have been vests designed to use air bladder technology. These vests are still very common today and used successfully among respiratory and neuromuscular patients. However, in the more recent years, a new vest with different technology has hit the markets; the Afflovest.
What Is the Afflovest?
The Afflovest is a battery operated high frequency chest wall oscillation vest that is not only portable, but fully functioning while in use. This vest is used to provide secretion mobilization therapy to treat chronic pulmonary and respiratory conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis and Bronchiectasis, and a variety of neuromuscular conditions.
What’s The Difference in The Afflovest vs Other Leading Brands of Vests?
While the Afflovest delivers high frequency chest wall oscillation similarly to other leading brand vest therapies, the technology itself it quite different. The Afflovest promotes lung secretion mobilization and airway clearance with the use of 8 oscillating motors sewn within the vest working directly on contact with the patient’s chest wall. This method of delivery optimizes efficiency while promoting independence and freedom by allowing patients to do their treatments anywhere they choose and at any time. The lithium ion battery that is used with the vest allows approximately 2 days of treatments before requiring a short 3-4-hour recharge time. Vest therapy users that once had to sit for 30 minutes 2 or more times a day, often in the seclusion of a separate room due to noise from compressors are now able to sit among their friends/ family and enjoy socializing or other recreations while receiving therapy. With the Afflovest, users can read, write, watch TV, play games, interact with loved ones, and are not required to stay seated and in one place for the entirety of their treatment. Often, compliance to therapy, especially with younger children may improve simply due to the ability to perform daily activities while completing vest therapy simultaneously.
Do You have a condition the may be improved with the Afflovest?
To qualify for the Afflovest, you must have a condition requiring therapy to help remove or mobilize secretions/ mucous. Your doctor will be the best one to direct you to therapy for this as they will be the ones to determine when / if the need is there for this therapy.
There are 3 main conditions that require high frequency chest wall oscillation to mobilize and manage secretions:
Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease that affects the pulmonary and digestive systems. Approximately 70,000 people are affected worldwide. About 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis are diagnosed each year, and 70% of patients are diagnosed by the age of 2. This disease can cause the body to produce an unusually thick and sticky mucous that can obstruct the airways and cause frequent respiratory infections if not managed properly. Patients with cystic fibrosis used to have a life span that was only expected to last into early childhood at best, but today, because of advancements in medicine and therapies such as HFCWO- the average life expectancy is much longer.
Bronchiectasis is a condition that presents with abnormally enlarged bronchi and bronchioles. With the enlargements of these larger airways, a decreased function of the cilia that aid in the removal of secretions is often seen. Bronchiectasis is typically diagnosed using a chest CT scan and often other pulmonary function tests as well. Patient with bronchiectasis require daily management of their secretions to help prevent infections and to improve their quality of life.
Neuromuscular disease can cause a decreased ability to cough and /or clear secretions that are normally made by the body. Due to weaknesses of the muscles and chest wall, what many healthy people are able to clean and maintain, someone with a neuromuscular disease may not be able to. With conditions including but not limited to ALS, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Disorders of the Diaphragm, and Quadriplegia, HFCWO therapy helps to mobilize secretions so that the patient is able to clear them.
How Do You Get An Afflovest?
The Afflovest must be prescribed by a physician and for a respiratory and/or neuromuscular condition requiring HFCWO to improve removal of mucous and other pathogens accumulating in the lungs. If you or someone you know have been diagnosed with Bronchiectasis or Cystic Fibrosis or have a neuromuscular condition that requires secretion mobilization therapy, the Afflovest may be the right choice for improved quality of life and compliance with therapy.
If you feel you would benefit from Afflovest or High Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation to help treat any of these listed conditions, speak with your doctor. If your doctor feels you would benefit from therapy using the Afflovest- let Hubs help you with not only the equipment you need, but the care you deserve.

So You Need Supplemental Oxygen?
Choose a Company That
Won’t Let You Down.
Has your doctor suggested the potential need for oxygen therapy? Or are you suspecting that the need is there? Are you wondering what the next step is?
To determine whether you will benefit from oxygen therapy, your doctor will need to test the amount of oxygen in your blood. This can be done in your doctor’s office with a simple and painless pulse oximeter that clips effortlessly on your fingertip.
Low levels of oxygen in the blood may be caused by cardiac and pulmonary diseases such as congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and chronic bronchitis. Having low oxygen levels may make you feel short of breath, tired, or confused, and causes damage to your body. If you are suffering from insufficient oxygen levels, you may be a candidate for oxygen therapy, also known as supplemental oxygen.
Oxygen Therapy Care & Equipment
Once your doctor has prescribed supplemental oxygen, you will be asked to select a home medical equipment company such as Hub’s Home Oxygen & Medical Supplies to provide your equipment. Upon receiving the order from your doctor, a service technician from Hubs will deliver and setup all of the prescribed equipment you will need for your home. With this initial delivery, you will receive your backup equipment to use in the event of a power outage, a concentrator for use within the home and/or with sleep depending on your prescription, and any needed supplies/accessories such as tubing and cannulas. If your prescription includes using your oxygen with rest and/or exertion, you will also receive lightweight, portable equipment to help you regain your independence and mobility to keep you on the go in the lifestyle you love.
Shortly after you are home and settled, a licensed clinician from Hubs will visit you to assess your oxygen levels and prescription requirements and make sure you understand how to use your equipment safely. During this visit, your clinician will check your vital signs, medication lists, oxygen levels at rest and with activity, and determine the best type of portable equipment for you to use. Assessing oxygen levels at rest and with exertion allows the clinician to slowly adjust your oxygen settings until they are titrated appropriately, to ensure that your oxygen setting is maintaining sufficient oxygen levels within your body. Proper oxygen saturations are crucial in treating cardiopulmonary diseases and reducing the stress on vital organs caused by oxygen desaturations. The clinician will also determine if you are able to tolerate a pulsed dose oxygen system, which will allow longer durations of use with your equipment.
The Hub’s Home Oxygen Difference
Our goal at Hub’s Home Oxygen & Medical Supplies is for our patients to be independent and active. We provide patients with portable equipment that is convenient to carry and use, enabling them to be independent of their concentrators to walk around their homes, take the dog for a walk, go to the grocery store, and carry out their normal activities of daily living with ease.
Hub’s Home Oxygen takes pride in our strong clinical team that consists of licensed nurses and registered respiratory therapists. Our healthcare professionals are diligent about making sure our patients’ equipment is adequately meeting their medical needs while still being convenient and easy to use.
A pulmonary or cardiac diagnosis is stressful for both patients, and their loved ones. Finding a medical supply company to partner with doesn’t have to be.
There is no need for your lifestyle to come to a screeching halt because of supplemental oxygen. We will provide you with equipment that promotes mobility and ambulation so you can remain active and independent. We encourage our patients to keep moving, to stay active and to feel better so they may spend more time with their family and friends.
What is important to you is important to us. Call Hub’s Home Oxygen for your oxygen therapy needs: (570) 326-6521.
How You Can Benefit From Nebulizer Therapy
What is Nebulizer Therapy?
A nebulizer, commonly referred to as a “neb,” is a specialized cup used to aerosolize certain medications. These medications are typically used to treat respiratory related illnesses and come in liquid form. Often, these medications are simply the liquid version of the same medications many patients take via inhalers. Many times, multiple medications are used simultaneously.
How does Nebulizer Therapy work?
The nebulizer cup works with the use of a compressor to take the liquid medication and deliver it in an aerosolized form via inhalation. Patients may use either a mouthpiece or a mask to deliver their medication, and this treatment is often referred to as a “breathing treatment.” Nebulizer therapy must be prescribed by a physician, and may be prescribed for a variety of different illnesses.
With the use of a nebulizer, your breathing medications will be broken down into very small and fine particles and inhaled deeply into the respiratory system. The goal of a nebulized breathing treatment is to administer aerosolized respiratory medications to patients with various pulmonary illnesses or diseases.
What are the benefits of Nebulizer Therapy?
Patients with diagnoses such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Asthma, Bronchitis, Bronchiectasis, and Cystic Fibrosis benefit from aerosolized medications due to the deposition of the small particles deeper in the airways. Patients struggling with very tight, narrow or restricted airways often find it easier to breathe this aerosol or “mist” as compared to an inhaler. Patients that struggle with the coordination of deep inhalation and activation of a meter dosed inhaler/dry power inhaler may also benefit from an aerosolized breathing treatment as it can be taken over a longer duration of time with normal breathing techniques.
How do I know what Nebulizer Therapy equipment to buy?
There are many different brands of nebulizers and, depending on the brand, the particle size and length of treatment may differ. Once your physician prescribes a nebulizer, you will need to select a home medical equipment company. The company you choose to obtain your nebulizer equipment from will determine what brand of equipment you receive. When customers come to Hub’s with a prescription for a nebulizer, they receive the machine, medicine cups and supplies and full instruction on use, cleaning, and maintenance. Nebulizers come in standard tabletop forms for regular use as well as smaller portable forms for on-the-go treatments. Hub’s offers both types of nebulizer equipment. We strive to keep our patients treated and healthy so they can live life to the fullest.
How can Hub’s help with your Nebulizer Therapy?
Hubs Home Oxygen & Medical Supplies understands the importance of high quality medical equipment and the difference it makes for our customers and their loved ones. A typical breathing treatment time with the equipment our company provides is approximately 5 minutes. Many other leading nebulizer cups on the market take approximately 7 to 10 minutes per treatment. At Hubs, we want to partner with you and your physician to provide you with the medical equipment and services you need. We take pride in our ability to stand behind the quality and durability of our products and the excellence in our care and service.

I Have Sleep Apnea. What Do I Do Next?
If you’ve been diagnosed with sleep apnea, you are not alone. A report released in August, 2016, by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), estimated 29.4 million American adults suffer from sleep apnea, or about 12% of the U.S. population.
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep Apnea is characterized by repetitive episodes of disrupted breathing from a complete or partial airway obstruction during sleep. It results in snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, often several times every hour, which can lead to daytime sleepiness and fatigue, high blood pressure, obesity, and headaches in the morning. If you or a loved one experiences these symptoms a physician should be notified. Most insurance companies cover at-home or in-lab sleep studies that diagnose sleep apnea.
Types of Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea, commonly just called “sleep apnea,” is a sleep disorder in which breathing is briefly and repeatedly interrupted during a person’s sleep. The “apnea” refers to a breathing pause that lasts at least 10 seconds. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when muscles in the back of the throat fail to keep the airway open, despite efforts to breathe. Another form of sleep apnea is central sleep apnea, in which the brain fails to properly control breathing during sleep.
Your Sleep Apnea Treatment Options
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the leading most non-invasive therapy for sleep apnea. Patients who use CPAP equipment wear a mask during sleep. The majority of people who use CPAP find immediate symptom relief and report increased energy and mental sharpness during the day. Essentially, a CPAP machine delivers one prescribed pressure to increase air pressure in your throat so that your airway doesn't narrow or collapse while breathing.
With your CPAP machine, you will use one of the following:
- A mask that covers your nose and mouth (full face mask).
- A mask that covers your nose only.
- Prongs that fit into your nose (nasal pillows).
If a CPAP has failed to adequately treat a patient, a bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machine could help. The main difference between BiPAP and CPAP is that BiPAP machines have two prescribed pressure settings: the higher pressure for inhalation (ipap), and a lower pressure for exhalation (epap). The dual settings allow the patient to get more air in and out of his/her lungs.
Your Sleep Apnea Care Experts
Once you’ve participated in a sleep apnea test and you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, your Doctor will recommend medical equipment to help treat your condition. That’s where Hub’s Home Oxygen comes into play.
Hub’s customer service representatives will speak to your physician about your symptoms, diagnosis and required equipment, and will check with your insurance provider to make sure they cover the equipment you need. Once Hub’s has confirmed your insurance will help pay for your equipment, one of our clinicians will call you to set up an appointment to meet with a licensed clinician to review your sleep study, discuss concerns, and learn how your equipment will help treat your sleep apnea. You will be fitted for your sleep apnea mask by one of our experts. The clinician will make sure you understand how to properly use the equipment at home to ensure compliance and optimal efficacy.
Monitoring Your Treatment for Efficacy
Sophisticated software allows Hub’s clinicians to monitor our patients’ progress with their sleep apnea treatment. Our experts use modem technology to collect current data on a patient’s use of equipment daily, which allows them to make recommendations for improved ease of use for more effective treatment. For example, if a patient calls his/her clinician to report, “I have a hard time keeping my mask on when I sleep,” that clinician can look at the patient’s data and see his/her mask came off at 2AM. Hub’s can then make recommendations as to an appointment for a refitting, a different mask, or offer tips for successfully fitting a mask at home. Advances in technology enable Hub’s clinicians to monitor patient compliance to make sure they are utilizing the sleep apnea equipment in the most optimal way for their better health. In fact, Hub’s Home Oxygen’s compliance rates are consistently ABOVE the National Average.
What Our Patients Have to Say
At Hub’s our clinicians have very close and personal relationships with their patients. Our experts are focused on listening to their patients’ needs to understand how they are feeling and identify what kind of therapy they need. Take it from our patients, here are a few sleep apnea testimonials:
“Judy was excellent in explaining everything to me and was willing to take the time and answer my concerns I may have had.”
“Genie did an outstanding job of demonstrating and explaining all the information I needed. She was GREAT!”
“Excellent service and instructions, Courtney gave excellent instructions. She was very kind and caring. I would recommend Hub’s!”
Encouragement, support and education are our priorities. Give us a call today to learn more about how Hub’s Home Oxygen can help you sleep at night: (570) 326-6521.
Caretailing: Putting “Care” into Health-Related Product Retail

Hub’s Home Oxygen/Cresscare Medical specializes in providing customer service and expertise to customers looking for health-related products that are not covered by their insurance.
